Crowdsourcing bicycle routes

If I had to think of a solution to start creating a bicycle routing system, I’d do exactly what The San Francisco County Transportation Authority has done: create smart phone apps, gather information where cyclists are riding, data mine those tracks and build route suggestions on top of that knowledge.

Bicycle routing is in my opinion far more complex than car routing. Car routing is mostly based on well known and documented rules, also known as road traffic regulations. Mix in estimated traffic figures, average speeds and fuel consumptions and you get pretty decent car directions.

For cyclists, a similar rule set exists, but it’s maybe a little more, let’s call it, elastic. Cyclists use short-cuts, turn where cars can’t, go against traffic, ride through parks and on poorly documented trails. High traffic doesn’t mean slowdown for cyclists. They ride by on the bike lane on the right side of a traffic jam at almost the same speed as without traffic. But high traffic creates a security risk some cyclists aren’t comfortable with taking and rather choose a different route.

A perfect route from A to B for speedy messengers doesn’t necessarily mean it’s also an ideal route for kids. For your daily commute you probably pick another route than for weekend rides, even though it connects the same points.

Bicycle routing criteria is manifold, sometimes psychological, hard to measure and to quantify. Researching how cyclists are going, for what purpose and under what conditions, is a very smart way to get started on that topic.

The project that kept me awake over the last couple of weeks was a mapping installation we did for the 50th year anniversary of our institute.

Imagining Europe

I don’t want to brag, but I think this thing is pretty cool: it’s a horizontal map projection on a table, where users interact with the projection, with the light, itself by moving little backgammon tokens around. That way visitors can explore the map and selected spatial and regional indicators.

It’s based on a video tracking system, set up by Emanuel, together with a light-weighted mapping application responding to those incoming video signals by querying a database and visualizing geographic data. The concept is rather simple, but as so often, the devil is in the details. Proper handling of the video signals was pretty tricky in our case and made us stay late at the office. Even though we couldn’t implement every planned feature, it was the first time we used video tracking for user interaction, we are very satisfied with our first release. The response from our visitors was great and we definitely see potential and will keep on working on that project.

However, I observed one noteworthy point while watching some visitors interacting with the map: several people standing around the table started instantly talking about the map, the shown maps triggered communication and people started discussing the presented indicators. Unlike clean paper printouts or maps on screens, people could touch the map, grab the tokens, place the tokens, touch and point with their hands and fingers onto the map without fearing canapé-greasy finger prints. Although it was only light, it seemed like they had a tool in their hands they could play with.

One visitor told me that the installation reminds him of the old large plotted paper maps and plans.

Another point for this vivid communication is the distance to the screen I think. If the projection would be vertical, every visitor would be at another distance, standing on another level, to the image. While standing around a table, where the image is in the center, the distance from the image to every visitor is constant. Maybe that makes visitors feel more equal and makes it easier for them to join the discussion. Nobody is standing behind, everybody can access – view, grab, touch – the information the same way.

If I remember correctly Microsoft had a research project or something about making the virtual PC desktop real. After I’ve seen what you can achieve with “grabbing & touching” I definitely think that’s the future. The mouse is a 30 year old idea. Isn’t that almost ancient in the world of technology?

Environment and Security

One aim of those efforts is immediate deployment of valid and high quality earth observation data in case of environmental disasters to support crisis management (e.g. ESA satellite imagery of the fires in Greece). Virtual Earth Hotmap

Virtual Earth HotmapNot only Vienna is heating up this week, we’re heading towards 35°C and more every day, no, even mapping sites are called hot today:
Microsoft released their research project Virtual Earth Hotmap.

Hotmap gives some insights about place popularity and shows where people have looked during the past 6 months in Virtual Earth.

It’s quite interesting that the map, the overall picture, is similar to other (spatial) analysis results we do in our day-to-day job: the map, literally based on hits and page impressions, shows an urban/rural divide and structures along major transport axis. Besides large urban areas, some tourism regions can be identified too – lake regions in Carinthia, skiing regions in Salzburg and Tyrol.

After a quick look at Virtual Earth Hotmap I’d say it provides some interesting data for regional marketing purposes and could be used additionally to other (tourism) website traffic analysis. E.g. if a tourism region doesn’t show up in Hotmap then probably not too many people are looking for information about or even searching directions to it (and going there?).

The Google threat, pt 2

As response to the conspiring thoughts brought up yesterday, an employee of Spot Image assured today that the Google deal won’t affect any other clients so far. Such deals are a matter of heavy economic pressure and Spot Image currently faces strong US competition.

However, concerns about possible input data shortage in European research programs as a result of “American commercial interests” were expressed during the discussion too. It was not the intention to blame anyone, just to stress a new situation Europe has to deal with.

So please US enterprises, play nice with European R&D initiatives…

EO vs. Google Earth

Don’t know how many PowerPoint presentations I’ve seen today, definitely too many, I hope after that PowerPoint overdose I can keep it out of my dreams tonight.

Anyways, one talk ended with some interesting conspiring thoughts about the recent Google – Spot Image deal (without knowing any details of course): What if Google bought multi-annual exclusive rights on Spot’s high resolution imagery?

Not only they would have excluded their direct competitors like Microsoft or Yahoo! from using the same imagery, no, such a deal would have impacts on the work of some European agencies (e.g. EEA) too. High resolution imagery data is also used as basis in research projects on environmental security (e.g. GMES). So, on the one hand Google would deliver the data to any Google Earth user for free, but at the same time such a deal would possibly constrain development of EO based products, often used as basis for decision-making in spatial and environmental policies for instance.

That was indeed a very interesting point brought up today. If I had to choose either view exciting backround layers and bird views in Google Earth or enable scientific projects in order to improve environmental security, I would vote for the latter…

Another interesting news today was the freely (open source principle) available and revised SRTM data at the JRC Soil Portal.
