When it comes to GIS software I’m strongly bounded to ESRI products and PostGIS is the only open source GIS software I had seriously in use so far. Thus it’s good to get an overview about what else has the GIS software market to offer.
A new version of MAMP, containing the latest updates of its components, is available for download.
MAMP (Macintosh, Apache, Mysql and PHP) is an excelent environment if you’re planning to do some PHP development on your Mac. As they state on the MAMP website, it should therefore not be used as Live Webserver for the Internet.

I use MAMP primarily to test or modify WordPress upgrades, themes or plugins on my local machine before installing them on my webserver. The installation, administration and removal of MAMP is pretty straightforward – a highly recommended package!

Thanks to Google’s Summer of Code an Open Source project is bringing up the best SVG editor I’ve seen so far – Inkscape. Since I’m not doing very artistic work in SVG I can’t comment those features. We are drawing maps and trying to make them usable online with the help of SVG (c.f. my ArcGIS SVG export macro). It’s a rather technical approach and for that reason I really appreciate the possibility to see the graphics (well, of course the visual work is vital as well) and browse/edit the XML tree at once.
As you can read in their FAQ Inkscape is not supposed to be a replacement for any big commercial vector graphics editor like Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia (Adobe) Freehand. But when it comes to SVG Inkscape is playing in the same league along with them.

Mein im September angetretener Job beansprucht zwar einerseits viel Zeit, die ich eher für die Fertigstellung der Diplomarbeit gebrauchen könnte, andereseits eröffnet er mir auch Zugang zu sehr interessanten Themenbereichen die hoffentlich auch in der Diplomarbeit berücksichtigt werden können.
PostGIS in Verbindung mit ESRI ArcGIS
IMSEMU: Ein (Perl) Layer der auf dem Mapserver (künftig auch auf PostGIS) einen ArcIMS Map Server simuliert und somit von ArcGIS-Clients genutzt werden kann.
PgArc: Extension für ArcGIS die es ermöglicht PostGIS als Geodatenserver zu nutzen.
OGC Interoperability Add-On: Extension für ArcGIS 8.3 um auf OpenGIS Web Map Services (WMS) und Web Feature Services (WFS) zugreifen zu können. Auch wird mit dieser Extension GML (Geography Markup Language) als Exportformat für Geodaten angeboten.
Der nächste Release von ArcGIS (Version 9) unterstützt u.a. die Open Source Programmiersprache Python und läßt daher auf weitere interessanten Entwicklungen v.a. in der Open Source Welt hoffen.
Webmapping
Mapbender: Auf der CORP 2004 hatte ich die Möglichkeit eine Präsentation der Firma CCGIS zu sehen, die die Open Source Software Mapbender entwickelte. Mapbender ist ein Web basiertes, mit PHP umgesetztes GIS Front End zur Bedienung von OGC-konformen WMS (Web Map Service). Mapbender (u.a. in Verbindung mit PostGIS) bestach auch bei verteilter Datenhaltung durch sehr hohe Performance.
