Urban Hacking Video

A Video about the Laser Graffiti hands-on session, organized a few weeks ago by some Metalab people at the Museumsquartier in Vienna, turned up (yes, the pipe actually works!) today on YouTube! And it’s not only a crappy YouTube clip, but a nicely done short documentary. Great!

Laser Graffiti Vienna

duff beerBig kudos to the guys at Metalab for the Laser Graffiti session last Friday at Mumok here in Vienna.

The GRL videos are impressive, but watching a live demonstration is way better. Even with regular office equipment (an iSight, a MacBook, a Benq projector and the green laser pointer) they achieved amazing results. Maybe it’s the solution for pimping boring PowerPoint presentations (especially if they’re somebody else’s…).

Photos of the event are already popping up and hopefully videos will follow soon. To ease a constant search of Flickr and YouTube I put a basic pipe together which grabs photos and videos tagged or named with “Laser Graffiti Vienna” and republishes them as RSS, JSON or KML.

Geeky Streetart

laserguided graffiti syste testrunThe guys from Metalab set up a Laserguided Graffiti System and are going to do a hands on session
next Friday, July 27th 23:00
at Musemsquartier main entrance.

Right before, starting at 21:00, there is a LED throwie making session taking place at Metalab too.

You find more information on Laserguided Graffiti at the Graffiti Research Lab, who I think originally developed those systems, or just watch the video below to find out what this is all about.

It’s not vandalism, it’s interaction with public space!

Streetart in Google Earth

Streetart - readable cityFor anybody interested in streetart (like stencils, stickers, etc.): I made the ongoing streetart exhibition “Streetart – The Readable City” available through Google Earth. Actually only the outdoor part is available in Google Earth (indoor it wouldn’t make sense, lack of GE’s accuracy, once Galileo is operating we can talk about mapping pictures inside of galleries). The outdoor part is a short walk through the 7th district of Vienna, along some streetart works. I did this walk with a turned on GPS, so that I could later at home geocode my photos and load them into Google Earth. That probably sounds pretty geeky, but I ensure you that I’m going for walks without the GPS device as well. Sometimes. However, playing around with Google Earth, GPS and Flickr was fun and I got a nice photo set with clean GPS EXIF entries.

Here you find the Network link for Google Earth.

On Flickr I put a few more pics from the indoor part too. It’s a free exhibition and I guess it was allowed to take pictures, at least nobody complained so far. If somebody feels like his intellectual property is violated by publishing this photos online please let me know.
