zoomandscale

Next weekend, as part of the Art and Cartography symposium, the exhibition “zoomandscale” will take place at the Academy of Fine Arts and Kunsthalle Wien project space karlsplatz.

We participate with 2 projects in the exhibition at Kunsthalle project space:

The opening is on Friday evening, celebrated with 4 hour presentation block of all participating art projects (no comment on that), and somehow reserved for symposium attendees – there is an entry fee for public visitors. Saturday and Sunday it’s open to the public, without entry fees.

Basically I’ll be there during the weekend, but not all the time. If you would like to meet and hear some details and backgrounds about the projects, please drop me a note (or comment) before and we figure something out.

Below is all the official information about the event:

art and cartography - zoomandscale

“zoomandscale”

The exhibition „zoomandscale“ in the context of the symposium „Art and Cartography – Cartography and Art“ shows a range of international artists concerned with maps in a wider sense. The exhibition presents a
variety of positions oscillating between artistic cartography and cartographic art which put into perspective the normative claim of strictly scientific cartography.
Knowing that the map is not the territory but its interpretation we allow different readings of territorial representations. In fact, artists´ maps may capture issues which cartographers´ “scientific” maps would never describe. Whereas the scientific attempt to describe the world makes a normative claim by using rational systems like longitude and latitude, artistic methods use opposite approaches by challenging or ignoring these coordinates. They may even take the liberty to shift points of reference to unexpected grounds. This is what makes maps so intriguing: they communicate different views of our world and help us understand its complexity.
The exhibition “zoomandscale” takes a closer look at the relation between objectivity and interpretation and presents works ranging from maps as reflection of the individual, up to studies of social fields and cityspaces. “zoomandspace” raises the question how to describe places as reference points for strategies of orientation and how maps as metaphors can describe spatial, social and psychological realities.

BarCamp Vienna Januar 2008

Next Saturday, 26th Jan 2008, BarCamp Vienna is going to take place at the infamous WerkzeugH again.

60+ registrations and some quite interesting session proposals listed at the BarCamp wiki will result in an exciting event again!

However, one thing I’d like to see more at such events is crossborder exchange: Bratislava and Györ are at a 1 hour distance, Brno is a 2 hour drive from Vienna. A BarCamp is an excellent opportunity to get in touch with a bunch of innovative people in an informal setting. I really would like to encourage everybody located in the Central European region and interested in new media and technology trends to join the unconference next weekend in Vienna. It’s worth the short travel!

Street Art tour in Vienna

copycatMy company is celebrating its 50th year anniversary (yes, the institution is that old!) tomorrow on 4th Oct and we have several micro events happening all over the day, ending in a ball tomorrow night.

One of them is called “Street Art – the readable city”, dealing with communication and interaction in public space. We set up a short tour through the 7th Viennese district, Neubau, passing a few Street Art hotspots and Inoperable, the Street Art gallery here. Our tour-guide will be Clemens, an Artist who knows the local Street Art scene very well and can tell some fascinating stories about the concept and motivation of Street Art during the tour.

Anyone interested is of course very welcome to join us!

Start: 4pm, Urban-Loritz-Platz, in front of the Hauptbibliothek
expected end: 6pm, Museumsquartier

Laser Graffiti Vienna

duff beerBig kudos to the guys at Metalab for the Laser Graffiti session last Friday at Mumok here in Vienna.

The GRL videos are impressive, but watching a live demonstration is way better. Even with regular office equipment (an iSight, a MacBook, a Benq projector and the green laser pointer) they achieved amazing results. Maybe it’s the solution for pimping boring PowerPoint presentations (especially if they’re somebody else’s…).

Photos of the event are already popping up and hopefully videos will follow soon. To ease a constant search of Flickr and YouTube I put a basic pipe together which grabs photos and videos tagged or named with “Laser Graffiti Vienna” and republishes them as RSS, JSON or KML.

Geeky Streetart

laserguided graffiti syste testrunThe guys from Metalab set up a Laserguided Graffiti System and are going to do a hands on session
next Friday, July 27th 23:00
at Musemsquartier main entrance.

Right before, starting at 21:00, there is a LED throwie making session taking place at Metalab too.

You find more information on Laserguided Graffiti at the Graffiti Research Lab, who I think originally developed those systems, or just watch the video below to find out what this is all about.

It’s not vandalism, it’s interaction with public space!

Stormy BBQ

Tree on carWhat a mess after the storm. Just arrived at home and I really had to watch out riding my bike to not run into parts of trees lying all over the streets.

Even worse is that the storm literally destroyed – yes, chairs took off and were thrown into the water! – our nice little company event at the Adria, including the outdoor barbecue.

Kudos to the Adria team who managed the messy situation quite well and made a pleasant evening possible, including indoor barbecue.

Plain lazy

BarCamp ViennaAs we found out yesterday the Viennese BarCamp audience are lazy travellers and not, unlike other nations, wandering like pilgrims from one BarCamp to another.

Nevertheless BarCamp Vienna was a great event and everyone interested in local Viennese yourfavoriteweb2.0buzzwordgoeshere projects, people, discussions, etc. is encouraged to join one of the upcoming BarCamps in Vienna. Since we aren’t going anywhere this’ll be the only possible way to get personally in touch with us.

One thing I definitely learned yesterday was that Open Space Technology is a brilliant method to initiate very productive discussions. Maybe it’s because of the participants, who else other than enthusiastic people decide to get up early and spend an entire Sunday at an unconference instead of relaxing at a pool, or is it because the self-organization makes most participants feel somehow responsible for the event and therefore they really try to get the best out of it?

Anyways, it’s a good concept and I wonder if OST can be successfully transferred to other topics in my field too, definitely worth a try.

Thanks to the organizers and werkzeugH, they did a wonderful job!

BarCamp, here!

After organizing the long weekend trip – finally we decided to go to a friends weekend house at Balaton – I know now for sure that I’ll make it to the next BarCamp Vienna.

It’ll take place next Sunday June 10, 2007 at werkzeugH, starting at 10am with breakfast.

I’m pretty looking forward to it since I think it’s a good opportunity to meet up with a bunch of interesting people in a pleasant Sunday atmosphere.

Of course everyone is very welcome to drop by, but if you plan to do so, I think organizers will appreciate your entry in the participants list first.

May Day Flickr meet up

1. Mai

Next Tuesday, 1st May, a few local Flickr users will meet up at the May Day happening in Vienna.

Meeting point: 1st May, 9.30am, at Burgtheater (right next to the Tramway station)

The plan:

  • walking around at Rathausplatz and May Day demonstrations (Austofred is supposed to lead the 16th district Musikarbeiterkapelle!)
  • meeting again, have a short break, snack or drink at Mercato Rosso
  • continue to Nordbahnhof, formerly an industrial zone, now an urban development area and overall a great scenery
  • and finally we’ll head over to the Prater-Opening, either watching Schlager-Karaoke, Austrian cowboys and many more rather strange events or just relaxing on a lawn and enjoying some concerts.

View the route on a map

Everyone interested in photography and curious about odd places like abandoned industrial zones is of course very welcome to join the group.

I’ve set up a Twitter feed where I’ll post our locations during the day, for people who want to drop by at some time or place.
